Anyone who started reading the blog at the wee beginning knows that we practice EC: Elimination Communication or IPT: Infant Potty Training, at least on a part-time basis. So I wanted to do a quick update.

We had what I guess to be about 50-60% “success” rate of catching potties. And we were only having to change a dirty diaper about every 2-3 days, since Twilli does most of her poops in the toilet, first thing in the a.m.

While we were out of town, we really relied mostly on the diaper. But I still took Twilli to the potty in the morning to do her daily “business”. Since the schedule was wacky, she wasn’t as regular as usual. So we were having at least one dirty diaper about 5 out of 7 days.

Since we’ve been home, I’m proud to say that Twilli is doing really well with it again! I think we’ve only had 1 or 2 dirty diapers in the 6 days we’ve been back!

We’re also happy to be starting the transition to cloth diapers! We picked up a small, 1 day supply of 6 unbleached Indian cotton prefolds and 3 covers. I decided to scrounge up enough funds to do that in order to support a lovely mama of triplets, who decided to amp her efforts from an online store to a p/t brick & mortar store.

Sunny was SOOOO helpful about making it possible for us to get the BARE BONES minimum “starter” set. Her store is lovely! I wish her the best of luck and hope all of the natural parents in Knoxville support her!

Those prefolds are SOOOOOO soft!!! And I truly believe that wearing the cloth diapers is going to accelerate the EC, since Twilli definitely feels the effect of the wet diaper and definitely TELLS US about it! (She’s always been very laid back about the wet disposables. At least they do their job of pulling the moisture off baby’s bum.)

I somehow feel like we’ve taken an inside out approach to all of this! Everything I read recommended combining EC w/cloth diapering. But my Westernized “modern” ways sometimes hang on with a vengeance! lol

Please leave a comment and let us know if you have any experience with EC or CLOTH DIAPERS.

We are taking a “backwards” approach to this, too. I hope to get in to the cloth diapers when we move out of my parents’ house (I just can’t get a system going in a place where I have to work around three other adults who think cloth diapering is weird and inconvenient). In my limited EC experience (another thing I hope to resume when we move), the cloth helps immensely. My little guy is one of those who isn’t bothered by a wet ’sposie either. But, I am accepting the fact that I may just have to wait until hubby is back from Iraq to get some help EC’ing.

Can’t wait to hear how your CD’ing goes! Good luck kicking those “modern” habits. ;)

Renee,
I just went for it and was very happy with my choice to cloth diaper. I had friends that did it and at first I had no idea why someone would want to do such a thing LOL! But by the time my daughter was born, I couldn’t stand the thought of plastic on her cute soft little butt LOL!
Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Good Luck and trust your choice!

I used cloth with X, most of the time. I loved it. I felt so much better about putting a cloth diaper on him, knowing it would be more comfortable for him -at least til it was wet! ;)

I found the prefolds and covers great (I liked the bummis whisper wrap with velcro, as I recall) and I used the tiny infant prefolds to increase the absorbtion as needed.

There was a mom making dipes…Schnooglywear was her brand. I’m not sure if she’s still in business, but if she is, her diapers were great!

Best of luck with the cding adventure!

I just posted a tutorial for you about making your own cloth diapers from repurposed flannel sheets. Stage one (drafting the pattern) is up and the sewing instructions will be up later this week. We’ve found the prefolds to be really bulky so these are a great solution that is really inexpensive. I made 18 for Nico and it cost me about four bucks.

These will also give you more mileage out of the expensive covers since the diapers are slimmer. I’m also working on a wool soaker pattern to hopefully eliminate the need for another set of covers (Nico’s FIFTH size now at ten months–he’s huge.)

He’s been in cloth since day one and we feel really good about it. The last time his grandparents came to visit, we used disposables for the convenience and I could not BELIEVE the amount of garbage!! Disgusting. It takes awhile to get into the routine, but it’s so worth it.

Hope this helps!! Let me know if you have any questions, I’m happy to help.

We started with cloth when our son (now 7) was 3 months old and I rarely looked back. I did discover that lugging cloth across the country and back while camping was nearly more trouble than it was worth. We never did try EC. I think I’m too on-the-go for that. I hate schedules, so I could never regulate, though I’m sure I changed diapers at the same time every day. :) We used mainly pre-folds because I didn’t mind pinning, but some Kissaluvs made hubby’s life easier. I adore the Bummis covers and also Pro-wraps. Oh, and wool covers and pants. I got the best wool ones in Europe.
